Put in new Asus motherboard with Athlon Xp 1800 processor. The hard drive I have was already loaded with Windows XP and worked perfectly with old motherboard and processor. The new system will not recognize the hard drive. It will see it in cmos but will not allow access to it. Even if I try to boot from Windows XP cd it will go only as far as it begins to copy to hard drive and then it freezes up. When I try to boot from the hard drive the system tries and then simply reboots, comes up to the screen where it wants you to choose whether to start windows normally or safe mode. Whatever option is chosen it tries and then automatically reboots back to the same screen. What am I missing?

I am going to answer this question the best that I can I hope it help you found the probelm.

How I am understand your question the hard drive had XP on it Did you reformat it and are trying to reinstall XP or are you just putting the drive in with the new board and booting up?

In general you can't successfully change MB and use a HD with a previously installed WindowsXP But it sounds like with the setup CD you can't even get to the recovery console

Check and see if your BIOS is set to boot from the CD.

Some other things to consider at this point -- Problems with the actual setup CD or the cd drive RAM? (new or from the old board?).
