Laptop won't work

My laptop will not turn on . the lights on cover go on, but the screen is black. I can not even open my cd drive ot anything. Someone said it might be the mother board. is this expensive and hard to fix. it will not work with the plug in adaptor or the battery. I was using it and it just shut off and that was that. It hasn't went back on since.

Best suggestion I could offer after looking it over was to obtain another similiar old laptop and transplant the hard drive, 50/50 chance that the drive is still good and her work can be saved Backups are good, backups should be made every now and then
