Any Instant Messaging security issues?

I've been thinking of getting Yahoo Instant Messenger, but I was wondering if there are any security issues with it?

If you Google 'instant messaging security', you will get lots of hits that are mostly about the risks for business users.

However, the main difficulty, apart from 'cyber stalking', seems to be that the information is passing between public servers and would not be that hard to intercept So, nothing very personal or financial should be disclosed.
