Why is my monitor going dark?

My monitor has turned dark all of a sudden. It didn't slowly degrade to its current darkness, it just turned dark. I went to bed, and woke up with it all dark. It has caused a problem. Some sites I can't make out some of the words or links due to the darkness. My questions are:

1.) What happened?

2.) How can I fix this?

How old is your monitor? Have you already tried the visual settings of your graphic card? Try installing a new graphic card or updating the drivers If it still shows up dark it might mean you need a new monitor
