How to uninstall Norton Internet Security 2004?

When I try and uninstall Norton Internet Security 2004 from my computer using the add/remove programs on my computer it always fails. I have no idea how to get rid of this. I hate Norton and I want it gone but cannot figure it out.

This question was answered on March 6, 2005. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.


To enable services on Windows startup

1 On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run

2 In the Run dialog box, type the following and click OK:

msconfig

3 In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Startup tab, verify that the following file is checked:

ccApp

4 If ccApp is unchecked, then check it.

5 In the System Configuration Utility window, on the Services tab, verify that all of the following services are present and checked:

Symantec Event Manager

Symantec Network Proxy

Symantec Password Validation

Symantec Settings Manager

ISSVC

Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service

Symantec Network Drivers Service

Symantec Core LC

Click Apply, and then click OK

Click Yes to reboot the computer

To remove Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall from the registry

1 Click nis2004xp_reg_removal.reg to start the download Click Save

2 Change the location in the "Save in" field to Desktop Click Save

3 If prompted, click Close when the download completes

4 On the Windows desktop, double-click nis2004xp_reg_removal.reg to import the changes into your registry click OK.

5 The Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall registry keys are removed

6 Right-click on nis2004xp_reg_removal.reg and click Delete.

For security reasons, it is recommended that you delete this file after running it If the file is double-clicked after reinstalling Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall, it may damage that installation.

To reinstall Windows Script 5.6

1.Go to the Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 Web site

2 Click the Download button under the section headed "Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP."

3 Click Open or Run this program from its current location Click Yes at the next prompt

4 Click Yes at the license agreement

5 When the installation is finished, at the "Windows Script 5.6 is now installed!" dialog box, click OK

6 Do one of the following

a If you have ever had versions of Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus for 2003 or earlier installed on this computer: Go on to the next section, "Section 4: Remove previous versions of Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, or Norton AntiVirus."

b If you never had versions of Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus for 2003 or earlier installed on this computer: Restart your computer and skip to the section "Section 5: Remove Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall folders and files."

To remove Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall folders

1 Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer

2 On the Tools menu, click Folder Options

3 On the View tab, select Show all files or Show hidden files and folders Click OK

4 Delete the Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall installation folders:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security

C:\Program Files\Norton Personal Firewall

Note: If you installed Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall to a location other than the default location, then delete the Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall folder in that location.

Do one of the following:

5 If you have no other Symantec products on the computer, delete the following three folders:

C:\Program Files\Symantec

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

7 If you have other Symantec products on the computer then go on to the next step.

8 Close Windows Explorer.
