Why does the computer shuts off unexpectedly?

my mother was on her computer last night and it just shut off she turned the power strip off and then back on it will come on for a few seconds and then it will shut right back off again

There are many reasons why your computer shuts down unexpectedly:

Download Speedfan and check voltage rails and temps at idle and under load If your rails are more than 10% (I don't like them to be more than 6-7%) off, get a new PSU The power supply isnt strong enough to handle what you have in the system If your temps are over 60C, then you have a cooling problem.

That's a very basic answer to a question that could have many answers It might not be your PSU, but the onboard regulators If it's a heat problem, that better cooling won't cure, it might be as simple as your BIOS temp settings are too low The other possible cause is your memory Since its easier to pull the chips and try a different one, I would check the memory first.
