Why does my 2nd hard drive not work?

why is it that when i try to connect 2 hard drives into one computer it wont load? it will just say "no primary master detected" or something like that. both hard drives are running windows XP but the 2nd one im putting in is crashed and im trying to recover the data. ive checked the connections and everything is connected how it should be and everything is how it should be but it just wont work. what should i do now? how do i fix this?

Try changing the jumper settings on the second hard drive to the "slave" setting to let the computer know which hard drive is to be used to boot up.
