I just bought an HP deskjet 3745. Now I'm having trouble with Print Artist 6. Before I was using HP deskjet 850 and had no problems with Print Artist. Now I have one of two problems each time I try to use Print Artist.

(1) I get this message " PRTARTST caused a general protection fault in module PRTARTST.EXE at 0009:00003006 [registers listed here] Bytes at CS:EIP:

26 8b 47 40 89 46 ec 26 8b 47 3a 89 46 ea 26 8b

Stack dump: [bunch of numbers and letters]."

OR (2) I open Print Artist ok. Then when I try to print, I print ok but the image disappears from the main screen. Just the image that I just printed. And I can't insert or bring up a new image.

I have removed and reinstalled Print Artist and the printer software. I have deleted the print artist ini file and the pixres.csh. I have changed the spool settings on the printer. Nothing has made any difference. I need help. Thanks.

This error occurs when the computer system and printer are low on resources To correct this error:

1 Make sure there are no other programs running in WINDOWS

To close programs running in the background:

Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and press the DEL key This will bring up a CLOSE PROGRAM BOX The CLOSE PROGRAM BOX will show the currently running programs

The only programs that should be listed in the task list are the EXPLORER and SYSTRAY If there are other programs in the task list, highlight one of them and click on the END TASK button

Repeat steps A and B until the only programs listed in the Close Program Box are the EXPLORER and SYSTRAY

NOTE: Some programs cannot be shut down using these steps Shut down those programs according to the instructions specific to those programs

2 Run the Make Compatible utility to designate more Stack Space to Print Artist

Go to START - RUN, and type: MKCOMPAT ( Enter)

This command will open the Make Compatible utility

Select "CHOOSE PROGRAM" from the FILE menu

Change the "LOOK IN" box to the proper Print Artist folder

Select the Print Artist executable file (i.e PRTARTST.EXE) and click on OPEN

Check the following 3 options:

- Don't spool to enhanced metafiles

- Give application more stack space

- Lie about printer device mode size

Now choose SAVE from the FILE menu, then EXIT the windows

NOTE: These changes will only affect the selected application

3 Try Printing from the program If the error still occurs, update the printer drivers Updating the printer drivers can eliminate conflicts and improve performance of the computer system Usually driver updates are free and can be obtained from the printer manufacturer's web site.

GOOD LUCK!
