I cannot open any of my icons on my desktop except Internet Explorer. I cannot open them from file folders, either. This has happened ever since I involuntarily downloaded some antivirus protection with a "hotsearchbar" that loads whenever I open internet explorer. I did not purchase the antivirus protection, but I think it has corrupted my system somehow. How do I get rid of this so my Icons will open?

Double-click on My Computer (in Windows XP, from the Start menu, choose My Computer)
Right-click on the icon for your hard drive (usually C:)
Select Scan for Viruses
The VirusScan window will appear and automatically begin the scan
The VirusScan window includes a count of how many files have been scanned and will expand with information about any viruses that are detected
VirusScan will automatically attempt to clean any infected files that it finds
If you receive a message that the file cannot be cleaned, click Delete
If you receive a message that the file cannot be deleted, re-run the scan
