Trying to backup system to my CDROM (e:)drive and i'm getting

e:/MyBackup.qic

You do not have permission to open this file.

See the owner of the file or an administrator to obtain permission.

Got the same thing when I tried to save my jpgs to the e drive

Is this because I don't have the computer passworded?

At the network signin I just hit cancel and let it finish startup. There is no network, I'm running a cable modem and Cox installed a network card four years ago when I started using cable.

You need to go to your back-up utility and go to Backup Wizard You should be logged in as the administrator or authorized as a backup operator Now you need to go to \WINNT\Repair This goes to your registry to correct backup problems Now you should be able to backup your system.
