What is this grinding sound?

when i boot up my 486 desk top/windows 98 it takes ages to boot up. then it only works for a few minutes before it makes a terrible grinding sound then every thing comes to a halth,and the screen is frozen...

i thoughtit was a hard disk crash at first.but the same thing happened again when i tried it a few days later.

i have been able to access data on my c: drive before it

That grinding sound may not be your hard drive, but one of your cooling fans Open up your desktop and turn it on Watch the fans on your CPU, Expansion cards, and chassis If one is not turning or turning very slowly, replace it ASAP.
