How can I reclaim some hard drive real estate?

This question was answered on February 3, 2006. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

Windows allocates up to 10 percent of each hard drive for the Recycle Bin by default Years ago when drives were measured in megabytes this method made sense However, these days the drives are so large that using 10 percent is absurd Even an 80GB hard drive will allocate nearly 4GB just for the recycle bin; imagine what it is with a 250GB drive! But don't worry, because you can set the amount as low as 1 percent for a large drive in 3 easy steps.

Steps to change the size of your Recycle Bin:

1 Right click on the Recycle Bin & choose Properties

2 Change the setting on the percentage to your desired level

3 Click on OK.

The amount of space you save might be surprising.
