How do I check my hardware?

I have two friends with different PC's, and they have

suspected hardware problems.

Is there a program out there, that will help diagnose

or indicate if there is a hardware problem, as opposed to

a software problem??? Will nuts & bolts determine if

there is a hardware problem???

They have been told "by experts" that they have a

bad motherboard, bad power supply, etc.

There are several programs that claim to check your hardware for problems, but unless the problem is severe most will miss the common intermittant problems Without more information about the specific problems I can't really help I have used these programs with very little success in finding real problems.
