Will erasing my hard disk make me be able to install Vista?

whenever i shut down my computer none of the settings or programs are saved and the original settings from the beginning are set once the computer is turned on again. i have not been able to upgrade to windows vista because the computer has to shut down and somehow does not keep going with the program. if i just erase the hard disk will it solve my problem and be able to upgrade to windows vista? Thank You

This is usually a last resort, and I think it would be better to reference the FAQ on microsoft.com before erasing your hard drive there are similar problems that your experiencing listed there that will be of some help to you Good Luck!!
