Hive corrupt

trying to boot up Sony laptop. Starts loading Xp then blue screen appears with\message: The registry cannot load the Hive (file): systemroot\system32\config\security or its log or alernate It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

How do I repair please?

Your best bet is to try to do a windows repair without formatting This way you should have all data and repair the file.
