I just installed Office 2000 Upgrade. I let it install in the default location and to remove the previous version. The installation appeared to go well and at the end it asked to reboot now or later. I chose to reboot now. The PC went through the shutdown/restart process. At startup the Windows logo screen appeared for a few seconds as normal. It then disappeared and the following text line appeared at the top of a black screen.

"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."

I restarted with a warm boot and got the same error. I restarted with a cold boot and got the same error. I then restarted in safe mode and ran Regclean. It ran once and found errors and I clicked on fix. I ran it again and got an Illegal Operation. I closed the dialog box and did a shutdown restart and got the same windows protection error.

Hope you can help. Thanks.

The hard part here is that you did not really get an installation error although clearly something went wrong during the installation There is a setup log that is created during the upgrade or installation of Office 2000 The following web page will show you how to access and hopefully troubleshoot the log and setup, good luck! http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q237/9/57.asp
