Why is my computer locking up when in Scan Disk?

What would cause scan disk and defrag to freeze up? (The only way out is to turn off the computer at the cpu.) They have always run perfectly til today. (The only recent change is a tracker ball mouse that just needed to be plugged in.)

That problem can be a very complex one, or very simple Try starting your computer in "Safe Mode" You can accomplish this by holding down the control key while the computer is booting, and then selecting "Safe Mode" when the DOS Menu appears Once inside try running Scan Disk, and Defrag in this mode The operation should run with no problem Hopefully once completed, the problem will be resolved If not let us know.
