How can eliminate freeze ups

The computer apparently freezes for 5 to 10 seconds then returns to normal. It does this perhaps every 5 minutes. If you type while its "frozen" the letters will display immediately after it "unfreezes." I recently defragmented the C drive, that took hours. The freezing episodes seem to have been occurring after the defrag though not sure.

UNANSWEREDCheck system resources by right clicking my computer,properties,device manager,and the performance tab.If system resource are below 80% go to start, run,type msconfig,click on ok,and click on the startup tab , and remove unnecessary items from the startup menu.This should eliminate freeze ups
