Where to find information on installing a joystick?

I am wondering how to setup a joystick. I am not sure of how to do this. The computer is saying that it is not plugged in when it is. I am confused.

Most game controllers, or joysticks will have some type of installation software to configure them Unless you have a joystick that is too old for windows to automatically recognize If so, you might have to tell windows you are using a standard 2 axis 2 or 4 button gamepad/joystick.
