When the computer boots up a screen comes up that asks for a sign on name (or some such thing). It does not cause any problems, but it is aggravating. Can I get rid of it? Please help.

If you have profiles set up on the machine it will ask for the login/password for the user of the machine so it knows what desktop preferences, power magement, screen saver, etc. to load for that particular user If you're the only used of the machine you can try right clicking on the network neighborhood icon, select properties and change the Primary Logon from client for MS networks to Windows Logon Reboot the system and it might take the login screen away.
