How can I correct my display settings?

I connot change 16 color to high color or 256 in control panel? It restarts and it is back to 16 color. I hope you can help

This question was answered on October 31, 2000. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.


More than likely you have some corruption in your windows registry.

1 Boot the machine into safe mode (press F8 before the windows splash screen comes up)

2 Right click on My Computer and select properties.

3 Select device manager and expand out display adapters.

4 Highlight each enrty listed and remove it Do not reboot windows if poromptd, remove all listings first.

5 Once all display adapters have been removed go ahead and reboot the system and let windows redetect your video card You may need the original driver disk or an updated driver from the manufacturer.

6 Try setting the display back to 256 or 16bit color and preferred resolution.
