What is the best way to install new programs?

This question was answered on November 25, 2000. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

1 If you are running Win98/Me, Click on "START", "RUN", and type "scanregw" in the box then hit ENTER A dialogue box will come up and tell you either your registry is backed up, or it has been backed-up once already , do you want to do it again? "YES" is the answer.

2 Hit "CTRL-ALT-DEL" and end all tasks except "explorer" and "systray" Some may have to be ended several times If a dialogue box appears saying a program has stopped responding, click on "End Task".

3 Install your new software.

4 Use the default setup options unless you are absolutely sure that you want to change the options.

5 When its finished, restart the system whether the software prompts you to or not.

6 If the system restarts properly you're done If not, reboot the system to "Command Prompt Only" (with Me, boot to a bootable 98 floppy disk), then type "Scanreg /restore" and choose the registry backup that you just created prior to installation.
