Low on Memory

my system says i'm low on memory.i run only two programs at a time 96mb of memory 44% free.will i have to reload win98.also my system will not allow me to run scan disc. or defrag. the drive.please i need alot of help thank you.I build the system myself.

Memory is tricky sometimes When you purchased your RAM, did you make sure that your purchased the same speed rating? (8ns, 10ns for example) Are you sure the RAM was placed in correctly? Try reinserting the RAM into different DIMM sockets If the computer is still not reading the correct amount of RAM, it may be possible that you purchased the wrong kind of RAM for your type of motherboard If this is the case, you will need to replace the RAM with the correct RAM for your motherboard
