Why did partition change to MS-DOS compatibility mode?

I have a 40 gig hard drive that I partioned into two drives first problems it only shows 18.6 gig.

I had alot of files on them and then the first partion changed to ms dos compatibility mode how do I changes it back to the way it was without losing the data on it?

The MS-DOS compatibility mode happens normally when you are using dos drivers on your CD-ROM Also if you used fdisk from windows this is probably the problem For a more precise answer there needs to be more information from you.
