GPF errors when installing Win 98

Question

I am not sure what I can do to fix this problem, I have tried everything. I get to the point when installing windows 98 where ist is updating system settings and it gives me a fatal exception OE VXD VMM (01), or fatal exception OE VXD VFAT (01). I have reformatted hard drive a number of times and nothing. I have changed hard drives, nothing, RAM, nothing. What do I do?

Hello and thanks for asking your question

Frankly, I am not sure what is causing your problem General protection faults can be caused by all sorts of things In your case you can't even get an operating system up and running.

You mention that you changed your hard drive and reformatted it How did you format it? If you used a proprietary, non-Microsoft software to prepare your drive, I suggest you reformat again using the dos utilities program format.com Run chkdsk and scandisk also before loading anything onto the drive Vfat is a hard disk driver and I suspect the problem is in the hard drive formatting Make sure you format with a fat32 file system.

I hope that this helps If you continue to have problems, go to the web and look at these web pages: Vfat errors-- http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q139/0/63.ASP or Troubleshooting Windows General Protection Faults-- http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q82/7/10.asp

I hope that I have helped you and that you are successful with your installation.
