ref kens column "added componments can freeze shutdown dtd 4-30-01" that portion that reads "to remove suspected programs etc" i am running win98se and when i click on Start/Run and type in "misconfig" i am told it doesn't exist. there are no tabs as indicated in your column. is there any other way to eliminate these startup programs in the starttray(next to the clock). at present i have ten programs showing. some of these programs are already on desktop and i see no need to have them take up space on the startray

thanks

A: Hello Cleo and thank you for your question.

It is possible that you had put the word "MISCONFIG" instead of the correct command "MSCONFIG", thus, it came back as nonexistent I would like you to repeat the same process click Start, Run and then type the command "MSCONFIG" This will run the System Configuration Utility Click on the Startup tab to open the Startup list You can then select or clear the check box to enable or disable (in your case)a startup item that you don't want to start I do have to remind you that if you do not know or sure what the item is or does, DO NOT REMOVE THE CHECKMARK!

The other option you can do to customized items from the Taskbar is to click on Start, Settings, Taskbar & Start Menu to open the Taskbar Properties You can then add/remove programs to suit your needs I hope this answers your question, if not please, resubmit

Good luck,
