How do I get this shortcut icon off my desktop?

While on a web page I right clicked and saved as "create shortcut" to my desktop. Later, when I went to delete the shortcut icon from my desktop an error message popped up saying ERROR DELETING FILE. "Cannot delete file: the file name you specified is invalid or too long. Specify a different filename."

I tried renaming the icon but the same message pops up.

How do I get this shortcut icon off my desktop?

Go to start> programs> windows explorer

click on the desktop listing at the far right try to delete the shortcut on the right through explorer
