Outlook Express opens slowly after changing from McAfee Anti-Virus to Norton Anti-Virus.

This question was answered on November 9, 2001. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.


If you have noticed that Outlook Express opens slowly after changing from McAfee Antivirus to Norton AntiVirus, this may be the reason:

The McAfee uninstallation removed the Imagehlp.dll file from Windows!

If this file is missing or damaged, then Outlook Express will take a long time to start You must restore this file to fix the problem Please follow the instructions for your operating system You will need your Windows installation CD.

Windows 95

You must use the Extract.exe file to extract the Imagehlp.dll file from the Windows 95 CD.

To extract the Imagehlp.dll file:

1 Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.

2 Type copy d:\extract.exe c:\windows\command\ and then press Enter This will copy the Extract program to the C:\Windows\Command folder.

3 Type extract /a d:\win95_02.cab imagehlp.dll /l c:\windows\system and then press Enter to extract the Imagehlp.dll file into the C:\Windows\System folder.

4 Type exit and then press Enter.

NOTE: The previous steps assume that the CD-ROM drive is designates as D: and that Windows is installed in the C:\WINDOWS folder Substitute the appropriate drive letter and folder name as necessary.

5 Restart the computer, and then try to open Outlook Express.

Windows 98

Use the System File Checker tool to extract the Imagehlp.dll file.

To extract the Imagehlp.dll file:

1 Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information The Microsoft System Information program opens.

2 Click the Tools menu, and then click System File Checker.

3 Click "Extract One File From Installation Disk," type imagehlp.dll and then press Enter Follow the instructions to complete the extraction.

4 Restart the computer, and then try to open Outlook Express.
