After I complete a thorough scan disc and there are no errors on the disc. When I attempt to defrag the drive it keeps stopping and after ten attempts I will get a message that the drive content keeps changing. I have no programs running at the time. I do a soft and sometimes a hard boot and still get the same result.

Hi [email protected]

It could be that scandisk is encountering an error or disk flaw soon after beginning the surface scan portion of its routine This, of course, would only be the case if you have it set to "Thorough", not "Standard" I say this because 10% is about where the surface scan begins Also, it's probably the case that there's nothing wrong with defrag.exe If under settings "check disk for errors" is checked then the first thing defrag does is run scandisk If there is a problem with your disk or with scandisk.exe itself then defrag would not proceed

Try this: restart in MSDOS mode Type in "scandisk/surface" Let it run through it's (long) routine Hopefully it will recognize and correct any errors If it doesn't start at all or hangs for a LONG time (give it a chance to fix errors) then you might try re-installing scandisk from the Windows CD Good luck
