I am currently getting online with Dial up 56k. but am considering COX broadband, because my community is finally getting the service. I heard that the connection is always on so that my computer could be at risk at being hacked. What kind of software will help keep people out of my privacy, perferribly free or low cost?

You are right to research intrusion prevention, software and hardware devices Since you will be connected to the internet 24/7 ( all the time)you will need to keep others out of your privacy Cox will probably have you buy or rent a cable modem, which is pretty much a router Now if you know anything about configuring routers, then you know this is your first line of defense, to keepiong intruders out of your computer.

There are many software packages out there that will help keep out intruders, like Norton Firewall, Mc Afee Firewall, and several others to name.

Here is a recommendation on a firewall software that is good because FREE Yes this fire wall is free to home users and it is excellent handling all your ports so that hackers can't see you on the internet Go to www.zonealarm.com and down load this software Its great Good luck.

thank you for your quiestion and happy computing.
