Virus / Worm Alert! 'My Party' mass mailing worm spreading fast!

This question was answered on January 31, 2002. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

A new variation of the common mass mailing worm is making the rounds and is fooling people because they think the attachment is a web address.

The so called 'my party' worm has the following signatures:

Subject: new photos from my party!

Message:

Hello!

My party.. It was absolutely amazing!

I have attached my web page with new photos!

If you can please make color prints of my photos Thanks!

Attachment: www.myparty.yahoo.com

The reason that this new strain is so dangerous, is that it uses a ".com" extension on the attachment which confuses many users into thinking that it is a web site.

The ".com" extension also represents 'command' files which makes it a program file that will run whatever code the programmer has compiled

This also makes it difficult for anti-virus programs to stop possible infection since command files are required to run for normal computer operations.

This method of disguise is bound to be just the beginning, so from this point on NEVER OPEN ANY FILE ATTACHMENT FROM ANYONE, ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT YOU KNOW, THAT HAS A FILE EXTENSION OF '.com'!!!

Most anti-virus companies have posted a clean-up program for this worm, so be sure to update and fully scan your system if you fell prey to this attack!
