Why can't I view my monitor symbols?

The symbols on the monitor cannot be seen any more, although it seems that they exist(system directory). I tried to put them again on the monitor and it seems that there is a second symbol on the monitor, but I don´t see anything. What can I do so that I have the symbols again? I appreciate your help.

Your question seems to have eluded me Are you talking about the desktop icons? What is the second symbol that you are seeing? Is your screen black or do you have a background?
