While defragmenting my drive I get a message that the drive cannot be defragmented because it contains errors, how can I correct those errors?

You can use a feature built into Windows 98 called "Scan Disk" to check for errors on your hard drive To start this feature, press the "Start Button", then "Programs" then "Accessories", "System Tools" and "SCANDISK" Make sure that "Thoroughly and Automatically Fix Errors" is checked and click the "Start" Button.
