What does SMART mean

When I go to boot up my computer I get this message,"Smart Failure on disk0:Maxtor 53073H6 (PM)".Then it will say to continue press F1.

The SMART technology automatically monitors a disk drive's health and reports potential problems While your hard disk may last quite a while longer, it also may crash at any time This alert is a warning to you to back up your hard drive and replace it before it crashes.
