Quite often when I attempt to gracefully exit Windows, the screens change in a "normal" sequence but then the Windows 98 splash screens displays with a message across the bottom (not a dialog box, just a message line) that says "Windows is shutting down". But, it never does shut down. I then have to turn off power. When I reboot, Scandisk runs. How can I get Windows 98 to shut down. I have checked the hardware devices in Control Panel and all seem OK. I would like to do some diagnostics when this problem occurs, but I don't know when it will happen until the machine is locked up. Can you help

Hi,

Try these steps to get your windows 98 to shut down:

1 click start, point to programs, point to accessories, point to system tools and then click system information.

2 go to the tools menu, click system configuration utility.

3 on the general tab, click advanced.

4 click the disable fast shutdown check box to clear it, click ok, and the click ok again.

5 click yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

ALso you should check teh Microsoft site to see if all of their critical updates have been

installed to your machine
