My erroro message reads:

While initializing device CONFIG-MG:

Windows protection error.

You need to restart your computer.

I get this about 2/3 time when I start my computer. Sometimes when shutting down I do not get the "it's O.K. to turn off your computer now" message. It is my belief (right or wrong) that these are somehow connected.

Can you help? We are wanting to hook up DSL and we understand that you need to leave on the computer and this seems to be not too good for ours. Is there something we, as computer illiterates, can do?

Any help would be appreciated.

You might try reinstalling your operating system to make repairs not a complete install Make sure you have all the latest Windows Updates and Patches You can get them from the START Menu at the top where it says Windows Updates Also check the help menu for swap file size information Also system file checker can help you locate corrupt files that can be reinstalled one file at a time fro your original operating system CD or installation CD
