every time I send an email, I get a message that says "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Works 2000". I hit cancel then I get a message that says "the feature you are trying to use is on CD ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert Microsoft Works 2000 and click OK".

What do I do? What does this mean? I dont have a MS Works 2000 disk.

I have had this same problem I see two possible solutions.

If you are running an antivirus package, update your virus definitions as per the software vendor's instructions.

If not, go to the Symantec.com website Run the online virus check you will find there When I started getting this odd error, I found that I had aquired a worm virus, allegedly through IRC (Internet Relay Chat) I then downloaded a trial version if Sophos (sophos.com) and ran their virus scan

Yep, it agreed I had a virus After doing what I did to eliminate the virus (which still left me with startup errors), I uninstalled the programs which gave me the errors I have not gotten around to reinstalling them yet.

There's another possible cause of your problem It may be even more probable, and it's described on the Microsoft Product Support site Here's the URL:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q290/3/04.asp.

Either paste the ENTIRE link into your browser, or copy your error, as you typed in your original question, into Google.com (without the quotes) Google will point to the page.

The Microsoft page has to do with installing the programs from a copy of the original CD In short, "Using a CD that you created is not a supported way to install or maintain Office." It probably works the same way with Works 2000

Sorry, but I think this is part of Microsoft's campaign against software piracy.

Should you not own a retail copy of Works, there is an excellent free software suite called OpenOffice It can be found at Tucows.com I'd recommend it.

Otherwise, follow the instructions on the Microsoft page I specified You may have to use the restore disks Compaq should have supplied with your machine That should fix the problem If you still get the error, uninstall and reinstall Works.
