Why is my fathers laptop screen blank and how can it be fixed?

The other day my father went to turn on and boot up his laptop (electric solitaire game) and the screen stayed black. The lights on the base show that it seems to be going through the normal start-up but nothing happens with the display, not even a flicker. Thanks for your time and advice. R.C.
