Why it you need to run with all programs and files close?

I tried to run scan disk in safe mode,but after scanning 446,350 onthe surface test of 1,250,362 it disappeared from the screen and I had to start from scratch again---HELP !

Make sure you have all programs closed before you do a scan disk or you will have to keep starting over.
