Why you buy the mother first?

MY COMPUTER IS A DINOSAUR. I WANT TO REBUILD IT FROM SCRATCH. I PLAN ON UPGRADING EVERYTHING. WHEN I UPGRADE THE MOTHERBOARD HOW DO I KNOW IF IT WILL FIT MY SYSTEM? HOW DO I KNOW IF MY OTHER UPGRADES WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH EACHOTHER?

When you buy the motherboard it will come with a mannual it wiil tell you what you need but if their is no inboard video you have to buy a video and sound card,modem with the lastest drives in order to make them it compatiable with the operating system.
