Why am I not getting any sound?

We had windows 95 and used windows 98 2nd addition upgrade. Everything seems to be working fine except we lost our audio controls and files. The volume control is no longer on the task bar and when I do a search to find them they cannot be found. We have no sound at all not even a music cd. How can I get my audio back into my computer?
