Why is my monitor blank and the fan still running?

My machine has auto shut-down capability, which was working fine. However now the fan stays on even after the machine has shut down (the monitor goes blank) and it would only switch off when disconnected from mains.

Furthermore, of late the machine boots-up with scan in progress and an error message – abnormal shut down detected. Any suggestions/tips?

Your machine isn't actually shutting down.

Why your monitor would go blank under such circumstances would be the first area for investigation.

If Windows will not shut down, the logo screen should appear and then stay on the monitor screen Carefully check the status of any screen saver and monitor blanking software, then shut them down entirely Right click on your desktop, and click "properties" to access the Operating System settings If you monitor has screen blanking capability, disable it, as well.

I suspect your machine is timing out, your monitor display is blanking (this is called "screen blanking"), and then, by not moving your mouse or pressing any keyboard keys, you are turning off your computer with the switch rather than performing an orderly shutdown.
