Why does the mouse work better on the ps 2 port than the usb port?

I have an ms optical intellimouse for my gateway laptop and when i attach it to my usb port it behaves like a touchpad. The movements are not as fluid and it moves slower. The strange thing is when i attached it to the ps 2 port via the adapter it behaves normally. I want it to stay on the usb port so i can use a keyboard also. I have tried loading microsofts software and i also tried a logitech usb optical mouse with its software and the exact same problem arises. I have played around with the mouse settings but it still doesn't work as good as connectiing it to the ps 2 port. Any ideas?

Well what the problem could be is that the mouse that you purchased may not be compatible with the computer or there may be a problem with the usb port on your laptop
