Why isn't my computer reconizing my DVD CD-ROM?

After installing Mediaplayer 9 update from Microsoft and rebooting, my pc lost my dvd/cd-rom. It does not show up in "My Computer" nor in the device manager. Tried reinstalling drivers to no avail. Microsoft's Knowledgebase was no help. They suggested that I remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters from my registry, but I do not have them. Please help!
