When I launch Internet Explorer 6.0, I get this message: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. Click detail will show;Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module mfc42.dll @015f:6c3cbf55. I can continue to surf the net, but the only way to close any window open is to click an Ok button(with yellow explanation mark) behind the window. Also this same message will appear when I try to launch setting/control panel.

Your error compares almost exactly with an error listed on the Microsoft site I have listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=227176

They seem to think it is related to Adaptec's DirectCD If you have Adaptec's program installed, this would align pretty well with my own experience concerning their software.

If you have more than one CD writing software package installed on your computer, you will need to remove all but one, and possibly reinstall the package you need to use Go with the software that came with your drive, if this is the case.

If not, enter the error into Google.com, or simply enter mfc42.dll error Depending on what has been installed (or uninstalled) on your PC recently, you will need to interpret the results in order to find your answer.
