Modem problem: can a modem be intermetent? can it be replaced or reinstalled?

Modem problem: Can a modem be intermetent? Can it be reinstalled or replaced?

If it has failed it would never connect but does at times??

The computer is an old Sony Vaio PCV-200 and i like it........ Thank you

I don't know if the modem is intermetent but I know it could be replaced and you should first try to reinstalled it.
