Why the settings wont take?

Approx every third startup, the display settings will switch from my preferred 800 x 600 to

1600 x 1200 or higher. I reset to 800 x 600 and it will hold for one or two starts, then change again. I am perplexed and can't figure out what is going on!

OS is W98SE

Monitor is Viewsonic PS775

Try to reset the setting again then click apply and then ok after that reboot your computer sometimes this will set the settigs
