How do I control the programs on the right side of the toolbar?

I would like to know how to control the programs that open up and run in the background that show up on the right side of the toolbar. Some of the programs are my virus scan, volume, AOL instant message, and MSN instant message. Anyway when one downloads new software some of the software will open and place a icon on the right side of the toolbar.

Right click on a space within the toolbar, go to toolbar and uncheck the programs that are on quick lau.nch
