How do you rectify winlogon.exe error?

In trying to load W2KSP3 from the CD purchased from Microsoft, I keep getting a winlogon.exe error during the process. How do I eliminate this problem without having to reformat and reinstall W2K with SP1 that was the original operating system that came with the Dell computer. Can I avoid having to back up all my files and folders and reinstall numerous software programs.

First make sure the service pack is not corrupted.

Then also check and see if your applying the correct sevice pack (I mean for example english service pack to english OS).
