How do you change the settings of colors display for your computer?

I am operating windows 98 and cannot get the display to show in other than 16-colours.

I have been into " control pane/display/settings " and altered the 'colour' box to 256-colours, but it reverts to 16 colours when I hit the "apply" button. This also happens when I set it to "Hi-colour".

Any ideas, please. All help much appreciated.

Right click on your desk and then go to properties and then setting their you will see how to change the colors just click the down arrow buttom and chose yur settings the clich ok .
